We had already done it once before, this thing of working from home. When there was the big power outage in Sant Gervasi, when we had a sick child, when we had masons or painters at home... Either by force or for reasons of conciliation, at Ampersand we already had experience in the field of teleworking .
In reality, however, translators can work from almost anywhere, as long as there is a minimally comfortable table and chair and a good internet connection to use the computer. We won't surprise you if we say that many freelance translators translate from their homes, where they have a space where they can work comfortably, while others opt for shared offices.
In the case of Ampersand, as a translation company, we have an office where we centralize all resources and shipments. This is where the internal translation and project management team usually work from. However, in the current Email Address List situation caused by the coronavirus we have had to resort to the spaces we have at home to be able to offer you our services. Fortunately, we only had to make a few adaptations because our systems and methods were already ready to work remotely.
Systems ready for telework
At Ampersand we have operations split into two platforms that operate entirely online. On the one hand, we have the project management platform , which allows us to control in detail the orders we receive. From here we receive your messages, make budgets, assign the jobs to the corresponding translator and, in short, do the full cycle of project management.
On the other hand, we have an assisted translation environment that allows us to make your translations with terminological and phraseological consistency thanks to the use of translation memories . Also in this case the resources needed to translate are "in the cloud" and we can access them from the office or from home.
Also, although it is not the same to have female colleagues at the next table, communication between team members is fluid thanks to the communication tools we have today. If this had happened 25 years ago, when Ampersand was just starting its project, teleworking would have been very different... or impossible.
When the lockdown started, customer service remained to be resolved, of course. Also in this case, however, technology has played in our favor. To begin with, the vast majority of customers and those interested in our services write to us by email, which we can use from anywhere. Also, we've moved the phone away from Ampersand to devices that are more at hand. Thus, we can assist you by phone at the same number as always. The last aspect that was pending was the sworn translations, which we send by courier or scanned by e-mail, since many formalities can be done with a digital version.
But something is different, isn't it?
Yes, of course. Some of us have children at home and we have to reconcile, more than ever, one thing with the other. Others have cats that "collaborate" by hovering over the keyboard when you least expect it (the server cat activated an unknown email feature a couple of days ago). And others would rather walk to the office and stretch their legs.
However, we can say that the provision of services is as usual and we will be very happy to serve you. Feel free to contact us by phone or email if you need a quote or if you have any questions about potential translation projects.
